First Key West Sailfish

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009
A couple of good friends and a break in the weather and Key West shows why fishing here is so special. After picking thru Dolphin after Dolphin and missing our first chance at a Sail while trolling we hooked up with  Danny’s First Key West Sailfish. Sometimes you have a feeling someone is happy on a charter , and sometimes it just beams. danny-1st-key-west-sail.jpg

Dolphin Make Annual Run in Key West !

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009
It is official the annual dolphin run in Key West has begun . Large fish today to 20 pounds in a half day , compare to area reports of 40 – 50 lb landings. This is always an exciting time because not only are large fish streaming by Key West, many schools of 5-8 lb fish are also in the area. The action on Mahi is one of the best in Key West and should be steady into August. key-west-scot-dolphin.jpg key-west-dolphin-42309.jpg

Vandenberg arrives in Key West

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009
All the bubble heads in Key West are , well just bubbly over the arrival of the 500+ foot Hoyt Vandenberg  in Key West. The ship, to be sunk at a secret time and place 6 miles south of Key West in 164 feet of water is going to be a dive only wreck according to people who breathe tooooo much compressed air. I got a couple of thoughts Goggle Eyes at night, and deep running deep trolls before 10:00 am. No compressors are allowed to run before then in Key West. key-west-vandenberg-1.jpg

Dolphin give in to Sailfish in Key West

Monday, April 6th, 2009
Over the last week we have been catching some really nice Dolphin in the over 20 lb range . It is always good to see the larger Dolphin start to show up off of Key West. This beauty caught by Anthony anthony-kw-dolphin.jpg and this nice cow caught by Jim in spite of a Dramamine overdose were typical of the better fish in the first week of April. jim-kw-dolphin.jpg As often happens here in Key West the conditions have changed radically and the Gulfstream has moved up very near the reef. The heavy winds at the end of last week (and again tonite ) are stirring the waters in the Gulf which together are creating an absolutely gorgeous color change with a very sharp definition. This has created incredible conditions for Sailfish in Key West . Sunday saw 3 released for 5 hook ups in a four hour period. This action was typical for anyone using live bait in the last few days. If you like catching Sailfish the action in Key West right now is as good as anyplace ever gets, and should hold up for some time to come, I hope.
