Nothing like the thrill of your first Sailfish. Key West or anywhere the thrill is huge. We were actually trying to catch Dolphin and we weren’t staying busy doing that . Sounded like other boats were finding Sailfish on the way in , so we moved in closer and right away got one out of two in the baits . A few minutes after release we had another Sail check out the baits , but I guess Ballyhoo was not what he wanted. . Glad we didn’t set out to Sailfish we probably would have to fight off the Dolphin.

The word about no oil in Key West is finally getting out and let me say there is not any oil in Key West. Charters are starting to run steady again and the fishing has been very good. The Dolphin bite has been tough as it can be in late July , so we fish the reef and wrecks and rocks that make Key West the great fishing spot that it is.We have been catching limits of Snapper and nice grouper . Usually after a limit of Yellowtails we do a little rodeo fishing with the Amberjacks on the wrecks just off the reef.

An AJ will sure test your skills and strength.

This is how you want Yellowtails

And for Grouper it is a shame this 60 pounder is on the protected list

With the help of the deep troll and a little venting this guy swims again, minus the 6 hooks we took out of him

One of the most popular fishing in Key West, the Wahoo can be found in the deep waters of the Atlantic. Wahoo fishing season is at its peak during the first two months of the year. Known for its speed and high quality meat, the Wahoo is one of the most prized game fish in Key West.

Successful fishing and catching Wahoo takes considerable level of experience with high speed species of fish. The Wahoo uses its speed to evade being caught. They are a challenge.

In addition to the challenge provided by the Wahoo, this species is one of the most popular in Key West fishing due to its delectable and top-quality meat. Anglers who successfully catch a Wahoo are encouraged to take it to one of the many local Key West restaurants that will cook the fish right there in their own kitchen.

Experience the best fishing adventure of your life aboard the Sea-Clusion. See why fishing for Wahoo in Key West, Florida aboard our boat is the most enjoyable and the most affordable charter available in the Florida Keys.

Fishing for Swordfish has become big in Key West. Mostly done at night, catching swordfish is best when the waters are calm. Fishing charters run out about 18 miles offshore Key West, drifting along the wall where the ocean depth drops to over 1, 000 feet.

The best type of lure used to catch swordfish is live bait attached to special fishing rigs with light sticks. Some fishermen use special lighting in the water to attract swordfish to the surface. The best time to fish is when there is a full moon. These fish are amazing and come all the way to the surface to eat. And when they eat… hold on. These fish are so powerful it is difficult to describe.

A hard fighting fish, the Amberjack can be found in a number of areas around Key West. They fight dirty and are determined to never give up. You can catch and reel them in from 200 ft deep waters only to watch them dive back down to the bottom again. They are a great looking fish, streamlined and very solid. Some areas on the Atlantic side of Key West have an abundance of Amberjack.

Marlin is like no other game fish. They are not easily hooked and it may take days to catch one. They school way offshore, near the Continental shelf which is about twenty miles offshore from Key West. This area is between the Florida Keys and Cuba. The Gulf Stream runs through this area which pushes water up over the edge of the shelf causing an upwelling of water and nutrients to which game fish are attracted to and feed on.

Fishing in Key West for Marlin may take a few days, so Marlin fishing trips aren’t for everyone. You pretty much have to be a die-hard angler and be fairly sea-worthy for the days-long trip. People who enjoy Marlin fishing know that all the patience is worth it just to catch at least one Marlin. Marlins are wonders of nature when hooked, traveling as fast as a car on an interstate highway and skimming across the surface of the water. Marlin fishing is a catch and release sport. They are not good for eating.

There are two reasons why fishing for Mahi Mahi in Key West is so popular. These fish give a great fight and they taste delicious too! The flesh of Mahi Mahi is delicate, light, and almost sweet tasting. A delicacy sought all over the world for the fine taste and texture, Mahi Mahi is available right here in Key West and the Florida Keys.

Fishing for Mahi Mahi requires going the distance offshore out in the Gulf Stream. Also known as dolphin, Mahi Mahi run along giant beds of sargassum, munching on the small fish that take cover in the weeds. You can find these vegetation beds by driving beyond the reef, out to sea. Then you troll and troll the waters for schools of Mahi Mahi. With a little patience and some luck or a tip from a fellow captain from another Key West Mahi Mahi fishing boat, you’ll strike it rich and hit a school of dolphin. Mahi Mahi love to jump, so be sure to have all others anglers ready because once you hit a school, they’ll all want to bite, one after another. Full on action!

KEYS TOURISM ADVISORY #39 July 2, 2010 • 3:45 p.m.
News and Information From the Monroe County Tourist Development Council

NOAA Releases Long-Term Oil Threat Models to Gulf and East Coast; Short-Term Threat to Keys Remains Low

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Friday released a study, using historical wind and ocean currents to project long-term likelihoods (during a 120-day-period that began April 22) that surface oil products from the BP/Transocean leak might reach areas along U.S. Gulf and East coasts.

For interests in South Florida and the Keys, the NOAA model indicates that the Florida Keys, Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas have a 61 percent to 80 percent possibility of being affected with scattered tar balls from the spill.

“Any oil reaching this area (South Florida and the Keys) would have spent considerable time degrading and dispersing and would be in the form of scattered tar balls and not a large surface slick of oil,” the NOAA study said, echoing Coast Guard, National Marine Sanctuary and Monroe County officials.

Coastlines with the highest probability for oil impacts (81 percent to 100 percent) extend from the Mississippi River Delta to the western panhandle of Florida where there have been and will likely continue to be oil impacts, NOAA said.

Much of the west coast of Florida and central Florida up the eastern seaboard have a low probability of shoreline impacts.

For the study, a “threat” was defined as when BP/Transocean spill oil, sheen, tar balls or other effects might come within 20 miles of a shoreline. However, it does not indicate they would come ashore. Whether or not oil travels ashore depends upon wind and ocean currents at the time, NOAA said.

Currently, for south Florida and the Keys, there is a very low risk of impact in the near future, due to the separation of the Loop Current in the Gulf of Mexico, according to NOAA officials, including Billy Causey, superintendent of the southeast region for NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuaries, which includes the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

“This is because the Loop Current has been cut off from the northern Gulf of Mexico and our scientists are saying there is no clear path for oil to travel from the spill site, which is about 500 miles to the northwest of Key West,” Causey explained in a video that is being shown on the home page of www.fla-keys.com and www.fla-keys.com/oilspill that provides spill-related information for visitors.

The current risk is so low that NOAA suspended production of its daily offshore trajectory tracks. Tracks will resume if necessary and officials don’t know how long the Loop Current will remain separated.

The study analyzed some 500 scenarios that were based on several simplifying assumptions. In particular, it did not start with the current footprint of the spill, but rather the spill beginning April 22, and the potential for threats until 120 days after. Also, the analysis did not adjust for effects of dispersants on the volume, weathering and movement of oil on the water’s surface. The study also did not take into account that the Loop Current has been detached for the past several months, according to NOAA spokesperson Jennifer Austin.
